Ron Unger, LCSW

Ron Unger will present three seminars this October, November and December. Mr. Unger is therapist and educator specializing in cognitive therapy for psychosis, and in understanding and working with the relationships between trauma and psychosis.

All seminars will take place at 2222 Coburg Road in Eugene, Oregon. Partial scholarships are available for consumers/ survivors & family members.

Cindi Fisher, of Vancouver, Washington, founder of The MOMS Movement and core member of Rethinking Psychiatry, went to Geneva, Switzerland last month to present her report, Forced Psychiatry and Psychiatric Abuse of African Americans, to the United Nations Committee on the Elimination of Racial Discrimination.

Join us this Wednesday as Cindi presents her report and discusses the UN committee’s findings at Rethinking Psychiatry’s September meeting.

Join us for a very special summer Rethinking Psychiatry meeting. We are excited to have Ted Chabasinski as our guest speaker!

Ted Chabasinski has been active in the psychiatric survivors movement since 1971. He was lead organizer of the 1982 campaign that successfully persuaded Berkeley voters to ban shock treatment in the city. Ted is known as a visionary, and an articulate, tough, and often witty speaker.

Now a patients’ rights lawyer, Ted was taken from his parents when he was 6-years old, experimented on with a course of electric shock treatments, and then sent to a state hospital for the rest of his childhood. He writes about the power of psychiatry and how it is abused, especially against children.

Cindi Fisher to present report to U.N. in Geneva

Cindi Fisher

Cindi Fisher, a member of the Rethinking Psychiatry core team and founder of the M.O.M.S. Movement, travels to Geneva, Switzerland this month. Her report, “Forced Psychiatry and Psychiatric Abuse of African Americans”, will be presented to the United Nations Committee on the Elimination of Racial Discrimination.

The report is the result of a collaboration with Tina Minkowitz and others. Minkowitz, a well known human rights advocate and lawyer, is founder of the Center for the Human Rights of Users and Survivors of Psychiatry (CHRUSP).

As a representative of African Americans and the Disability Community, Cindi will be presenting the report and discussing its implications with UN representatives and other U.S. NGO’s. The meetings are scheduled for August 10-15, 2014.

Electroshock, also known as ECT, shock or electroconvulsive therapy, involves the application of two electrodes to the head to pass electricity through the brain, with the goal of causing an intense seizure or convulsion. Studies have shown that it always damages the brain. Yet it is still being given at facilities like OHSU and Kaiser Sunnyside Medical Center. Yearly 100,000 people in the USA get ECT. Most people are forced to have ECT. Worldwide, it is estimated that 1 to 2 to million ECTs are being given.

Our guest speaker at Rethinking Psychiatry’s March 19th monthly meeting will be Jon Keyes. Jon will talk about reforming our approach to helping people who are going through a mental health crisis. He will critique our current process of inpatient hospitalization and discuss improving and creating positive holistic alternatives.

Jon is a licensed professional counselor (LPC), Nationally Certified Counselor (NCC), and certified Health Coach. He works as a holistic mental health therapist in his private practice, Hearthside Healing in Portland, OR. He also works as a therapist at Adventist Medical Center, dealing with individuals at their deepest levels of mental health crises. Jon is a contributing writer for Mad in America, and is very articulate, informed and passionate about rethinking psychiatry.

Big Pharma buys influence in Oregon Legislature

Information just released by The Lund Report reveals that pharmaceutical companies spent nearly half a million dollars since 2011 to influence elections and legislation in the Oregon State Legislature. Top donors to political campaigns include the world’s largest drug company, Pfizer (maker of Zoloft and Xanax), and Eli Lilly, the world’s largest manufacturer of psychiatric medications (maker of Prozac).

Recipients of Pharma campaign contributions include members of the Senate & House leadership, and members of key committees. The report concludes Big Pharma got its money’s worth. Read the full report here.
